Living in Erin, Ontario

Two heritage villages, the headwaters of the Credit River, horse country and a country fair that has run since 1850, about an hour from Toronto. Here’s what daily life in Erin looks like.

The town

Small-town Ontario, in the GTA’s backyard

The Town of Erin covers about 300 km² of rolling Wellington County countryside: Erin Village, Hillsburgh, and the hamlets of Ballinafad, Brisbane, Cedar Valley, Crewson’s Corners, Orton and Ospringe. Mills were built on the Credit River here in the 1820s, and the railway arrived in 1879.

About 15,000 people live here today (County estimate, 2026), and the County plans for 26,300 by 2051 as new, sewered neighbourhoods fill in around the two villages.

Erin Village’s Main Street is the heart of town: 1800s storefronts with cafés, a bakery that has been here since 1946, a gastropub, boutiques, a used bookstore, the LCBO and a grocery store. A heritage walking-trail map covers the downtown.
